Sneak Peek into SMS...Happy Teacher Appreciation Day! |
From the first bell to the final countdown of the year, our teachers have been nothing short of incredible. Beyond the lessons, assessments, and carefully planned days, they’ve filled our building with laughter, creativity, and moments that matter—whether showing off some amazing outfits for our Theme Thursdays, celebrating small wins, or simply showing up with a smile when a student needed it most. They’ve built a school that is truly caring, where every student feels seen; capable, where growth is encouraged and celebrated; connected, where relationships come first; and a community of leaders, where both students and staff rise together. The connections they’ve created this year reach far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact that students will carry with them long after the final bell. We are so grateful for the energy, heart, and joy they bring each day—because around here, teaching is just the beginning of the magic ✨

A Note from Dr. Hottelman... |
Dear South Middle Families,
As I sit down to write this final Principal’s Corner, I find myself filled with gratitude and pride for the time I’ve spent at South Middle. Serving this school community has truly been one of the most meaningful experiences of my career. Thank you for your trust, your support, and for believing in me as a leader. Because of that partnership, we have been able to come together in powerful ways to support our students, helping them grow not only academically, but as leaders and individuals.
South Middle is such a special place. The strength of this community, our staff, students, and families, is what makes it thrive. I have been continually inspired by the care, commitment, and pride that each of you brings every day. It has been an absolute honor to serve alongside you.
While it is bittersweet to step away from my role as principal, I am incredibly confident in the future of South Middle. Dr. Matt Buschman will be stepping into this role, and I know his dedication, leadership, and commitment to students will continue to move this school forward in all the right ways. South Middle is in great hands and will continue to thrive.
Thank you again for allowing me to be part of this journey. I will always carry South Middle with me and look back on this time with deep appreciation and pride.
It’s a great day to be a Mustang! 🐴
Thank you for your support,
Jackie Hottelman
Principal

As we head toward the end of the month, students will begin MAP testing on April 21. This is an important opportunity for them to showcase the academic growth they’ve built through months of hard work, focus, and high-level learning. Classrooms have been buzzing with effort all year long, and it shows.
To help students be at their best, please continue encouraging them to get a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and come to school each day ready to focus and do their best. Below is the MAP Testing Schedule

During Teacher Appreciation Week we are taking a moment to celebrate the incredible educators who inspire, encourage, and support our students every single day. Their dedication goes far beyond the classroom, shaping futures, building confidence, and creating a school community where every child can thrive. To honor their impact, we joined in on the fun with the “Give This…” trend as a special tribute to the teachers who make a difference in countless ways. Watch our Teacher Appreciation video and help us celebrate the heart of our school community! 🍎🎥✨

Habit of the Month: Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw |
Leader in Me Habit 7, Sharpen the Saw, reminds us that taking care of ourselves is essential to being our best in every area of life. This habit encourages balance by focusing on renewing ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. At SMS, students are reminded that success is not just about working hard, but also about making time to recharge, reflect, and grow. Whether it’s reading for enjoyment, staying active, building positive relationships, or practicing self-care, sharpening the saw helps students maintain the energy and mindset needed to thrive.
This habit connects strongly with the SMS motto by reinforcing the importance of growth, resilience, and leadership. When students invest in their own well-being, they are better prepared to face challenges, support others, and continue learning with purpose. Sharpening the saw is about understanding that leadership begins with self-improvement and balance. By caring for themselves and striving to grow in all areas, SMS students embody the values of our school community and create a foundation for lifelong success.

National Administrative Professional Appreciation Day |
On April 22nd, we celebrated the incredible individuals who keep SMS running smoothly day in and day out. From the first friendly greeting at the front desk to the countless behind-the-scenes details that never go unnoticed, our administrative professionals are the heartbeat of our school. Their organization, patience, and genuine care for students, staff, and families make a difference in ways big and small—every single day.
We are so grateful for their dedication, positivity, and the calm they bring to even the busiest moments. SMS is stronger because of them, and today (and every day) we say thank you for all you do! ❤️

After School Activities Dismissal Procedure @ 3:20 |
As after school activities continue this spring, we’d like to send a quick reminder about our 3:20 PM AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES pick-up procedures to help traffic flow smoothly and keep students safe.
For after school activity pick-up at 3:20 PM, please enter the campus through the North entrance and exit through the South exit. This one-way flow helps prevent congestion and allows cars to move through the line efficiently. We also ask that the center pull-out lane remain clear at all times so that cars that have already loaded students can safely pull out and exit.
Following this procedure makes a big difference in keeping AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITES dismissal organized and moving quickly for everyone. We appreciate your help in keeping the line moving and ensuring a safe pick-up for all students.
Thank you for your cooperation and support during our 3:20 PM After School Activities Dismissal. |
