A Note from Dr. Hottelman |

SMS Families,
As we move into the final stretch of our first semester, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our entire South Middle community - students, families, and staff. Your partnership, positivity, and support continue to make SMS a truly special place, and I am grateful for the way you show up for our students every single day. Thank you for helping us make this first semester so successful. I’m excited to finish strong together.
I also want to take a moment to thank the Veterans who joined us for our Veterans Day celebration. Your presence brought tremendous meaning to our event, and our students gained so much from honoring your service. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to share the day with you, and we thank you again for your courage, sacrifice, and dedication to our country.
As the weather becomes more unpredictable, this is a great time to review our district’s procedures for inclement weather days, including late starts, early dismissals, and school closures. Click here for more information.
Thank you again for your ongoing support and for making South Middle such a caring and connected community. Let’s keep the momentum going as we wrap up the semester with purpose and pride!
Thank you,
Jackie Hottelman

As the season of giving approaches, SMS is excited to kick off our annual Winter Wishes initiative!
From December 1–12, our community has the opportunity to help make the holidays brighter for students and families in need. Whether you're interested in purchasing a gift directly from a wish list or contributing a monetary donation, every act of kindness helps spread warmth during this chilly season.
If you'd like to select a specific wish or have any questions, please reach out to Lindsay Mosley.
For monetary donations, contact Nell Hasheider at the SMS main line: (636) 281-0776.
Together, let’s make a meaningful impact and show what it truly means to be a caring, capable, and connected Mustang family. ❄️☃️

What a special day in Mr. Hopkins 8th grade Social Studies!
Mrs. Suzann Paulter, a descendant of the Zumwalt family, shared her family’s journey from the East Coast to the Midwest. Students learned about the pioneers who built Zumwalt’s Fort and the family’s proud military legacy- including Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr., former Chief of Naval Operations.

Habit of the Month: Synergize
This month at South Middle, our students are focusing on Habit 6: Synergize – “Together is Better.” Synergizing means valuing differences, working well with others, and combining strengths to achieve more as a team. Whether it’s through group projects, athletics, or daily interactions, we’re helping students see that great things happen when we listen, learn from others, and collaborate toward a common goal.
You can reinforce this habit at home by encouraging your child to listen to different viewpoints, appreciate what makes others unique, and find ways to work together on family tasks or decisions. When we synergize, everyone wins!

Book Club Reads to Dogs from Diamonds in the Ruff Rescue |
|
|
Our SMS Book Club had a pawsitively heartwarming visit this week thanks to the incredible volunteers from Diamonds in the Ruff Rescue!
They brought rescue dogs to SMS, giving Book Club members a special opportunity to spend time with animals in need of human connection. The gentle interactions, quiet companionship, and wagging tails created a calming space where students could bond with the pups. We’re so grateful to Diamonds in the Ruff for sharing their furry friends and helping our Mustangs experience the power of kindness in action. ❤️🐶
