Lewis & Clark Update - 5.1.2026

EMPOWERING LEARNERS, BUILDING LEADERS - EVERY DAY FOR EVERY TRAILBLAZER!

We Build Leadership through the Arts!

This month we held our Fine Arts Fair in conjunction with SPE's Family Heritage Night. The AMAZING Ms. Bray collects student art projects throughout the year and lines the hallways with their work, turning LCE into the greatest art museum you've ever seen! One photo doesn't do it justice!  Thank you to Ms. Bray and to our talented LCE artists for making the building look amazing in the month of April!

Trailblazer Families,

We have a lot coming up this month, so we would highly suggest you subscribe to our district and building calendars to have the most current happenings handy!

MAP Testing: Our annual Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) testing continues! We will be testing in Math on May 5 and May 7. You can help your Trailblazer through words of encouragement, by ensuring they get a good night's sleep, and helping them get a healthy breakfast in the morning!

Fly Up Night: We invite any families with a current 2nd grader at SPE to join us in the LCE cafeteria at 5:30 p.m., May 7 to learn more about LCE and what we have in store for our amazing 3rd graders to be in the 2026-27 school year!

Fly Up Day: SPE will be bringing our Trailblazers-to-be to LCE on May 12 to get tours and hear from student speakers about LCE, all with the goal of making our transition all the smoother in the fall!

Field Day: Our Field Day is slated for May 18! If the weather does not cooperate, we will reschedule for May 19. Send your Trailblazer with a water bottle and sun screen!

5th Gr. Events: Our 5th graders finish their LCE career with a bang! They have several fun end-of-year events - the annual Egg Drop (May 8), the Awards Assembly (May 15), and the 5th Gr. BBQ (May 21)!  Your child's homeroom teacher will have all the details about the Egg Drop and BBQ.  We will send invites to our winners for the 5th Gr. Awards Assembly and will recognize our student scholars, honor roll, behavior, and attendance winners!

Last Day of School: The last day of school is May 21. That's soon! What??? We will dismiss at 1:30 p.m., as this will be an Early Release Day. We also do a 5th Grade "Clap Out" on the last day of school - students will walk through the building and be clapped out by their teachers one last time! 5th Grade parents/families are welcome to join us, with info for this annual tradition to come closer to the day-of!

Finally, we are sad to announce that a few of our amazing staff are moving on to new roles in FZSD. Taylor King will be teaching at the Early Childhood Center next year. Finally, Trisha Bray will be following some of our artists to South Middle School to serve as an art teacher. Additionally, Maureen Benson (5th grade) is retiring this year. We will miss these amazing folks terribly!

If there is anything we can do to help you or your Trailblazer, feel free to contact our office at (636) 397-3111, between 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., or reach out to one of our administrators directly. We are having a fantastic 2025-26 school year, as we go WILD ABOUT LEADERSHIP, together!

Spread the word!

We are still taking FAMILY responses to the Leader in Me Measurable Results Survey (MRA), and would love to hear from 50 or more families!  Please check your email for a link from Mr. Johnson, complete, and send Mr. Johnson a screenshot of your confirmation page to enter your child in a drawing for a free recess!

April Student Scholars!

We are starting a new initiative to recognize incredible leaders in the classroom! Each grade level content team nominated one Student Scholar for the month of April. These are students who are not only growing as readers, writers and mathematicians, but who show great leadership as well.  A big shout out to all of these Trailblazer Leaders!

Celebrations

It's Staff Appreciation Week. There aren't enough words to thank our teachers, paras, clerks, cooks, bus drivers, and all the rest for ALL they do for our students!  From planning engaging and meaningful lessons, to helping students through hard moments, to feeding and transporting students, and much much more, they do miraculous things every day!

Congrats to our amazing Technology Teacher, Stevie Snee, who won another grant for our tech program!  She was recently awarded a grant for classroom items from the Missouri State Teachers Foundation and will use it on an Ozobot kit for our tech lab!

We recently completed our final ELA iReady diagnostic for the year and are excited to share that our median Trailblazer met their annual growth goal in the area of reading!  As we finish the year, 56% of our students are on or above grade level, and the majority of our students improved their placement throughout the year! Specific shout outs to Ms. Herd's, Mrs. Krueger's homeroom and Ms. Grove's students, whose median growth was over 170%!

We are on track to meet our attendance goal for the year!  Our goal is 93% attendance and we are ahead of that goal right now.

Classroom Spotlight - Teaching Science through Hands-on Experiments and Demos!

Time to get our hands dirty ... kinda.

Our Science resource, MySci from Washington University, is AMAZING. Students and staff have the opportunity to learn science concepts and principles together through experiments and demonstrations.  They learn science conceptually and intuitively, so as they move into higher grades the more theoretical knowledge can build on a solid conceptual understanding.

And ... it's more fun that way anyway!

Here, you can see Mrs. Morgan demonstrating physical and chemical changes, using her document camera to project the demonstration to the whole class!

A variety of boys and girls in red t-shirts, some holding a black and yellow sign reading

Congrats to our Fun Run Team!

A huge shout out to Ms. Chapie (our Mental Health Professional) and to our Better Together Fun Run team!  Together, this team:

  • Read 26 developmentally appropriate books (30 pages = 1 book, if reading chapter books)
  • Complete 26 good deeds/acts of service.
  • Ran 25 miles individually (30 mins of exercise = a mile)
  • And then completed their final 1.2 mile on race day, Saturday, April 25 2026.
