Lewis & Clark Update - 2.1.2026

EMPOWERING LEARNERS, BUILDING LEADERS - EVERY DAY FOR EVERY TRAILBLAZER!

We Build Leadership by Recognizing Excellence!

In January, we recognized some amazing Trailblazers staff for the annual Employee and Educator of the Year awards.  A huge congratulations to Westi Smith (Copy Clerk, Employee of the Year) and Rachel Mizera (ELD Specialist, Educator of the Year)!  Mrs. Smith wears a zillion hats at LCE - in addition to helping make copies and doing clerical work to support teachers, she also gives students breaks, helps with lunch supervision, greets parents and visitors in the mornings, and serves as our backup clinic clerk. Mrs. Mizera is both an exceptional support for our students and our teachers. She is a passionate advocate for growing all learners in co-teaching settings, and supporting her students in their language development. Both are incredible assets to LCE and are worthy recipients of these awards!

A Note from Mr. Johnson

Trailblazer Families,

First, I want to take a moment to celebrate and highlight our first semester academic growth. Our students have completed the second iReady benchmark. Our typical Trailblazer is on track to meet their math goal for the year, and is nearly 80% of the way to their reading goal! 20% of our students have met their STRETCH growth goal, meaning they have already made about a year-and-a-half progress this year. Wow! For students who maybe didn't grow quite as much, we have intervention plans in place and are ready to continue growing these students into second semester and beyond.

We will be holding a celebration assembly Feb. 13 to recognize all of the amazing achievements of our students over the first half of the year, and to gear up for great things the rest of the year! Unfortunately, due to space constraints it will be a students and staff only event, but be sure to check-in with your student afterward about what awesome things they accomplished first semester, as virtually every student has something great to celebrate!

This month we hosted representatives from ILC, the publisher of our math resource. We toured classrooms and watched engaging warm-ups and learning activities at both LCE and SPE. We have amazing things going on in our math classrooms! Students are engaged, working hard, talking about math concepts, and supporting one another in learning new skills and strategies. Our guests were blown away!

We have a new date and time for the D.A.R.E. Graduation, which was snowed out. It will be Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m. We are still working on a new date for the Spaghetti Dinner and will communicate that directly to 5th grade families when it has been arranged!

Middle School Transition Events: Both of our middle schools have transition events in February. Both schools have representatives visiting Feb. 2 to introduce their schools to our students. South Middle School will be hosting their informational night at 6 p.m. Feb. 5. DuBray will be hosting their event at 6 p.m., Feb. 10. We are sad to see our 5th graders go, and unfortunately these events tend to start getting them very excited to leave us!

PTC Trivia Night: Our PTC Trivia Night is Feb. 6. Doors open at 5:45 p.m., and Trivia starts at 6:30. aLearn more about our trivia night

Child Advocacy Center Presentations: The Child Advocacy Center will be on campus starting Feb. 3 for their presentations related to Body Safety and Signs of Suicide. You should have received permission forms for your child to participate or for you to opt them out (depending on their grade level). Please contact your child's teacher or email Ms. Chapie for questions or for forms.

Great Skate Night: Our January Great Skate Night has been rescheduled to Feb. 17! We can't wait to see many of you there!

Lighthouse Review Prep Day: This year, our school is going for Lighthouse status under the Leader in Me initiative.  This means that our student leadership practices have reached a level of maturity and sustainability, and have become embedded in our school's culture. We will be holding a preview day Feb. 19, where a team of Leader in Me coaches will be touring our building, observing leadership dens and classroom lessons, and meeting with students and staff about student leadership at LCE!

If there is anything we can do to help you or your Trailblazer, feel free to contact our office at (636) 397-3111, between 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., or reach out to one of our administrators directly. We are having a fantastic 2025-26 school year, as we go WILD ABOUT LEADERSHIP, together!

Our 5th Grade D.A.R.E. Graduation is officially rescheduled! We will be holding the graduation ceremony at East High at 6:30pm on Wednesday, Feb. 18.  We will be moving the Spaghetti Dinner to Lewis and Clark, and will select a different date for that event. We are committed to bringing this tradition back, we will just need to be a bit more creative of how we do it! Stay tuned on that part!

January Student Scholars!

We are starting a new initiative to recognize incredible leaders in the classroom! Each grade level content team nominated one Student Scholar for the month of January. These are students who are not only growing as readers, writers and mathematicians, but who show great leadership as well.  A big shout out to all of these Trailblazer Leaders!

3rd Grade ELA: Jaise Overstreet

Our grade picked this student because of how much growth he showed on his ELA Iready.  He worked really hard and grew 99+ points from his beginning of the year score.

3rd Grade Math: Esly Vazquez-Escobar

Our grade picked this student because she works hard every day and always tries her best, especially in math.  She never gives up when learning is challenging.  She is kind to others, respectful to everyone, and always does the right thing.  We are so proud of her and the positive example she sets for others!

4th Grade ELA: Ezra Boyle

Our grade picked this student because he exceeds expectations in reading, writing, and word study, and is a leader for the class. Ezra is always on task and puts time and effort into every assignment. Ezra is the first one to “give three” and sets a high standard for the rest of the class. Great job, Ezra, keep it up! -(Ms. Herd)

4th Grade Math: Vienna Clapp

Vee was picked by her teachers and peers because she is the definition of hard work! She always has a positive attitude and takes the time to make sure her work is the very best it can be. We love how clearly she shares her thinking with the class. Way to go, Vee—your effort truly shines!

5th Grade ELA: Avery Lewis

Our grade picked this student because Avery is a great example of a strong ELA student. She does a great job of advocating for herself when she is in need. Avery also puts in 110% effort to every draft of her work which shows in the growth that she has made this year. Avery’s self-advocacy, hard-work, and determination are just 3 things that make her an awesome ELA scholar.

5th Grade Math: Laikyn Double

Our grade picked Laikyn because she consistently puts forth her best effort every day. She is a wonderful peer partner and supports others when they are struggling to understand a skill. During math time Laikyn shows great focus and determination as she works to learn and improve.

Celebrations

As noted above, iReady will tell us what we already know - our Trailblazers are moving and grooving in reading and math!  We are on pace to meet our annual growth goals in both areas, and many students will meet their stretch growth with a positive second semester!

Thank you for your patience and understand as we  worked to reschedule our D.A.R.E. graduation, which will now be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18. (Information regarding the spaghetti dinner is still forthcoming.)  A huge congratulations to our 5th graders for completing the D.A.R.E. program!  This requires them to attend D.A.R.E. class lessons, participate actively, and complete and present an essay project about what they learned from the program.

A huge thank you to our Custodial and Maintenance departments, who did an amazing job prepping our campus to return to school after our snowy days in January!

One more shout out to ALL of our Educator of the Year Nominees: Rachel Mizera, Julie Westbrook, Mike Israel, Kim Galvin, Megan Meyer, Shannon Herd, Chelsea Bagwell, Tricia Carnes, Josie Otten, Carter Lee, Hannah Rohr, and Nichole Morgan!

One more shout out to ALL of our Employee of the Year Nominees: Westi Smith, Gabrielle Davis, Sarah Chapie, Katie Auld, and Candice Littlepage!

Classroom Spotlight - Math Activities!

Anyone can grab a calculator and solve just about any math problem - but to truly understand the underlying math and how it works takes deliberate conceptual practice.  And that's what our students are learning, each and every day!

By creating visual representations of math concepts, students begin to understand how numbers and concepts are connected to one another, which builds a deeper understanding as they advance to more complex topics.

This deeper understanding is critical for students in upper grades for understanding algebra and geometry, and opens doors and pathways for all mathletes to learn at high levels!

Each month, we will continue to highlight exciting learning activities going on in our school. If your child comes home RAVING about a class activity, let me know! You can reach me at peterjohnson@fz.k12.mo.us!

February Habit of the Month: Sssssynergize Like a Snake!

Snakes show synergy when they huddle together in large groups to stay warm during the cold winter months. By sharing their body heat in a shared den, these reptiles survive much better than they ever could if they were all alone. This teamwork proves that even solitary animals can achieve a greater goal when they choose to work together!

Trailblazers synergize by talking through problems together, working together to meet goals, and thinking of one another before making important choices!

How else does your family follow HABIT 6 - SYNERGIZE?
