Lewis & Clark Update - 4.1.2026

EMPOWERING LEARNERS, BUILDING LEADERS - EVERY DAY FOR EVERY TRAILBLAZER!

We Build Leadership with Novel Studies!

In ELA, each grade level participates in a Novel Study unit. Right now, 3rd graders are reading and discussing the novel Charlotte's Web. Through studying this classic tale, students learn all about friendship, serving others, and finding your voice. To get into the spirit, Mrs. Lemmons's classes created class messages, just as Charlotte does for her friend Wilbur!

Trailblazer Families,

It's April!  It's hard to believe how little time is left, but each day is an opportunity for our Trailblazers to make new friends, learn new skills, show what they know, and grow as leaders and learners.  We have a lot coming up this month, so we would highly suggest subscribe to our district and building calendars to have the most current happenings handy!

During the month of April, we like to begin collecting feedback from families to help inform our class placement process for the upcoming year.  If you would like to provide feedback, please email me or email Mr. Brodbeck any information you feel is helpful. We do not take teacher requests by name, but we are open to any characteristics you feel are helpful for your child's teacher or any student situations we need to be aware of before making any final decisions.

Some of the other big happenings this month would include:

Goal Setting: To ensure our last few weeks of learning are meaningful and to make sure we engage all Trailblazers, we will be launching some building-wide academic Wildly Important Goal (WIG) tracking. Students will make action steps for the month in their homerooms when we return from break, will track how they do over the month of April, and at the end will celebrate all that we've achieved together!

Field Trips!  We have field trips in all three grade levels this month. 3rd Grade is going to Busch Wildlife, 4th Grade is going to the Daniel Boone Home, and 5th Grade is going to the Science Center! We should note that if you have not already turned in volunteer paperwork and have not already gone through screening processes, there will not be enough time to get through this process at this time.

Reading iReady Diagnostic: Our final Reading Diagnostic will take place the week of April 21. Students will have the chance to show how far they have come in English Language Arts (ELA) and with their reading skills. You can help out at home by making sure they get a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast, and by sharing words of encouragement on testing day!

MAP Testing: The Missouri Assessment Program Grade Level Assessment (MAP) is almost here! We showed growth as a school in all three domains (ELA, Math, Science) and can't wait to see what our students can do with another great year of learning under their belts! We will start the week of April 21 with the Science assessment, take ELA the week of April 29, and will finish with Math the following week.

Fine Arts Fair and Family Heritage Night: One of our campus's truly great traditions returns on April 28 with the LCE Fine Arts Fair and the SPE Family Heritage Night!  At LCE, our choir, recorder, and dance clubs will be performing and showcasing all they've learned this year.  We will also have art displays in the ramp hallway between LCE and SPE. A big thank you to Ms. Bray, Mrs. Snee, and Mr. Israel for running what is always such an incredible showcase of our students!  Our neighbors at SPE will have food trucks and stations to showcase the various family backgrounds of our school community. We would love to see all of you there, whether your child is in a club or not!

If there is anything we can do to help you or your Trailblazer, feel free to contact our office at (636) 397-3111, between 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., or reach out to one of our administrators directly. We are having a fantastic 2025-26 school year, as we go WILD ABOUT LEADERSHIP, together!

March Student Scholars!

We are starting a new initiative to recognize incredible leaders in the classroom! Each grade level content team nominated one Student Scholar for the month of March. Celebrations

We recently completed our final iReady Math diagnostic of the year.  Individual score reports will be sent home in the near future.  Overall, our Trailblazers continue to grow in the area of math.  Our median, typical Trailblazer has made the expected amount of growth to this point, and half of our students have made significant progress towards their stretch growth goal.  And, to accommodate our very early release date, we aren't even at the end of the year yet! 4th grade had our highest median growth, with a median score of 91%!

A huge thank you to our PE teacher, Eli Haley, who ran another great Kids Heart Challenge fundraiser this year.  We raised just over $11,000 for the American Heart Association, funds that contribute to research to treat and prevent heart attacks and strokes in kids and adults. We appreciate everyone's generosity who contributed to the KHC!

A big shout out to our Student Lighthouse leaders, and their sponsor, Lisa Lemmons. We wrapped up the March Madness fundraiser, which raised money for furniture for our outside classroom and our "patio!"

This month was National School Boards Month, so a big thank you to our engaged and supportive FZSD Board of Education!

There are a few very important Appreciation Days during the month of April - National Paraprofessional Appreciation Day and National School Librarian's Appreciation Day!  On these days we celebrate our paraprofessional team - Nina Norman, David Heald, Aidien Johnson, Kylee Charlton, Leah Prater, and Melissa McBride - and our amazing Library team - Amber Moss and Katie Schiemeier!

This March we also celebrated Lucky to Have You Week, a week where we celebrate those we are lucky to have in our lives.  We had two awesome Donuts with a Lucky One days, where families joined us for a donut breakfast.  We also had another great Title I event, courtesy of Love on a Leash.  A big thank you to our PTC, our office team, and Mrs. Westbrook for some great events during this great week!

Classroom Spotlight - Teaching Artistic Behavior and Choice-Based Art!

Our art teacher, Ms. Trisha Bray, is launching new models in art classes this year - Teaching Artistic Behavior and Choice-Based Art.  In these systems, students have structured expectations to complete self-directed learning activities with her support and facilitation in a variety of artistic media.  These include STEAM projects, drawing and painting, pottery, and even materials-based crafts!

This has been a resounding success, and supports our Leader in Me work by empowering students to explore their artistic talents with an element of choice built in.  Students make purposeful choices on what they want to try next, and reflect along the way about how they have grown as artists!

Each month, we will continue to highlight exciting learning activities going on in our school. If your child comes home RAVING about a class activity, let me know! You can reach me at peterjohnson@fz.k12.mo.us!

April Habit of the Month:  Roar Like a Lion, Find Your Voice!

The mighty lion, king of the jungle!  The mightiest of the savannah's fearsome hunters, the lion has a roar that will shake your soul.

At LCE, we strive to encourage all students to find their voice (Habit 8!).  We encourage students to stand up for themselves in the right way, to find their genius and share it with the world, and to shine their light brightly.  We do this through Leadership Dens, through class discussions and partner activities, and through our daily class meetings and leadership times.

How does your family use Habit 8 - Find Your Voice and Inspire Others to Find Theirs?
